Afternoon From High Line Park. Oil on canvas. 120 x 120 cm.
Cristóbal Pérez García's oil painted scenes are those found in twilight or dusk, landscapes encased in smog and the highly trafficked realities of living in an urban metropolis. The vantage points are those of the pedestrian, Garcia's own view when embarking on a new city to paint. He recently shared a video, Traffic, that gives a short, but intimate glimpse into his process both within the studio and on the street.
Garcia's highly textured paintings give a nice balance to the blurred masses of city inhabitants and his detailed buses, cabs, and cars. Each painting also has an emphasis on light, either natural or the reflection of vehicle and traffic lights in the crowded streets.
Garcia was born in 1976 in Álora, Málaga and studied painting and sculpture at the Universidad de Granada, Spain. Garcia has upcoming exhibitions at Galería Mar from March 5-18, and Art Expo New York from April 23-26. You can see more of Garcia's urban landscapes on his website and frequently posted on Twitter. Winter Scene with Two Men, Eugène Ciceri
In the Metropolitan Museum of Art Use the zoom or download icons under the image.
Ciceri's wonderful evocation of winter is at once both drawing and painting; naturalistic and stylized; controlled and free; monochromatic and yet rich with "color" in a way similar to Chinese ink paintings.

Chris Turnham (update 2015)
// lines and colors
Chris Turnham is an illustrator who works in film and television as well as publishing.
His crisp, lively images of architecture, streets, people and plants always seem loose and free, despite their exacting draftsmanship and use of hard edges. Largely, I think, this is due to Turnham's deft use of close color and value relationships, with which he somehow coaxes softness out of hardness.
I particularly enjoy his stylized but naturalistic depiction of plant forms, and I was delighted when reproductions of some of his work for the movie Coraline was included in the "Coraline Mystery Box" I received as part of LAIKA's promotion for the movie back in 2008. (See my post on my Coraline Mystery Box and Coraline Mystery Box Images.)
Chris Turnham's work, specifically his silkscreen prints, will be on display in an exhibition titled "California Modernists" at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA, from February 21 to March 1, 2015.
For more, see my previous posts on Chris Turnham (below).

Online Gallery: "The Colored Pencil Spectrum"
// Artist's Network
The winter 2015 issue of Drawing introduces us to the work of four colored pencil artists who use colored pencil to create tightly rendered drawings of very different varieties.
Cecile Baird–whose drawing of compact fluorescent light bulbs graces the issue's cover–creates dramatically lit still lifes. Anna Hammer draws the figure–usually the same figure, her daughter. Erwin P. Lewandowski draws streams, pools, lakes, waterfalls and other scenery inspired by his native Michigan. Art Venti imagines hallucinatory, semi-abstract landscapes built from abstracted geographic forms.
In the article, all four artists discuss what attracts them to their subjects and explain their process for creating realistic drawings in colored pencil. They also offer advice on such topics as how to draw water and how to light your subject. Here, we offer a gallery of terrific images by these artists that didn't make it into the pages of the magazine. To learn more, visit the artists' websites, and get your copy of the winter issue of Drawing. Enjoy!
