Beautifully-Illustrated Envelopes Take Snail Mail to the next Level
// Brown Paper Bag
You've got mail! And no, not those pesky spam emails, but beautiful, hand-painted envelopes by Lucy Halcomb. The Brooklyn-based illustrator uses gouache to adorn brightly-hued paper products which she then sends to lucky recipients. Lucy chronicles her delightful creations on her Instagram called @lucy_mail. Some of my favorites are below.

Art Venti
// lines and colors
Art Venti is a California based artist who creates large scale works on paper in a variety of media, primarily color pencils, watercolor markers and watercolor. He classifies some of his compositions as "pencil paintings".
His subjects can perhaps be considered imaginary realism, representing swirls and curves of paper-like bands, twisted gossamer draperies and diaphanous semi-organic structures, suspended in space and projected into atmospheric depths.
These are painstakingly rendered, often over the course of several months, with attention to textural surfaces and the quality of light illuminating the complex suspended objects, and passing through translucent areas.

Arantzazu Martinez [feedly]
----
Arantzazu Martinez
// lines and colors
Originally from Vitoria, Spain, Arantzazu Martinez moved to New York in search of 19th century style classical training. There she studied with Jacob Collins, both at the New York Academy of Figurative Art and the Water Street Atelier.
Martinez frequently puts her classical training in service of the interpretation of fantastical literary subjects, both historic, as in her take on the Dracula story (images above, top); and contemporary, as in the commission she accepted from Lucasfilm Ltd. to participate in the 2009 "Star Wars Visions project" (image above, second from bottom).
Her work shows an appreciation not only for the classical draftsmanship and painting techniques of previous masters, but for the refined value and color relationships found in the best 19th century painting.
When viewing the gallery on her website, be sure to use the "Zoom (+)" button to the upper right of the individual images. You can find additional large images of her work on the Art Renewal Center site.

A vibrant but poignant look at LA life and its forgotten courtyards by TJ Tambellini
// It's Nice That
TJ Tambellini's photography is born of a psychogeographical concern with his own neighbourhood, LA, and among the bright pinks and blues and the Hockneyish pool fascination lies a more sinister message.
